016: Vitals - I Wore an Oura Ring for 596 Nights to Find the Cost of My Hardest Year. My Sleep Score Never Flinched.

My Sleep Score Didn't Flinch. My Nervous System Did.
I wore an Oura ring for 596 straight nights, looking for the cost of the hardest year of my career. My sleep scores came back fine. Above average, actually. By every rule we've been handed, that's a win.
Except this is an Oura ring experiment, and I pulled the raw data files myself.
On my most stressful days, my average sleep score was 83.4. On my normal-stress days? 83.4. Same score. Two completely different kinds of days.
My sleep score didn't flinch. My nervous system did.
Today I'll show you the actual numbers, and the four things they changed about how I manage stress. And you will not need a smart ring to use any of it.
The Unfair Advantage: Season 2, Episode 5
This is Season 2 of the show — The Unfair Advantage — where we stop talking theory and start mining my actual N-of-1 data. Season 1 built the framework. This season, I'm the experiment.
Last week, my DEXA scan showed body recomposition: 12 pounds of lean mass gained, visceral fat down 78%. The structural data said my protocol was working. But this week, my smart ring shows what that protocol actually cost me. Those turned out to be two completely different balance sheets.
Here's why this matters — not just to me. As high-performing women over 40, we've been handed a very specific story about stress: that we'll feel it, that it'll show up as bad sleep, and that we'll know it. What I found is that the cost was absolutely real. It just never announced itself in the place I was watching.
I should tell you what I mean by a hard year. 2025 proved to be the most demanding stretch of my executive career. High stress, long hours, canceling family vacations to keep my head above water at work. And I did what most high performers do. I powered through. I treated my biology like an infinite resource — until it wasn't. My stress climbed, my energy tanked, and the answer I kept getting was, "yeah, you're in your 40s."
That's the year this data covers.
If we're just meeting, I'm Alysia Bell. I'm 44 — an executive, a mom, and I've tracked my macros for nearly 4,000 straight days while wearing an Oura ring 24/7 for the better part of two years. I'm not a doctor and I'm not a sleep scientist. I'm a busy professional who bought some smart tech, glanced at it occasionally, and finally decided to do something meaningful with it. I downloaded my own raw data files and ran the analysis myself, because I wanted to know what that year actually cost me.
Here's the top line. Four takeaways from 596 nights. And at the end, I'll share the one number I stopped tracking and the number I replaced it with — because for me, it turned out to be a better metric.
Takeaway 1: My Sleep Score Was Auditing the Wrong Department
Oura labels my days normal, stressful, and restored. Over 19 months, I logged 141 stressful days and 387 normal ones. Identical average sleep score, to the decimal. My sleep duration differed by six minutes. Six minutes across 500 nights. The difference is immaterial.
But three things did move. My HRV — heart rate variability, the clearest signal we have of how well our system is recovering — dropped. My resting heart rate went up. And my readiness score fell.
Stress didn't bankrupt my sleep. It taxed my heart.
Let me make that concrete. On December 12th, I slept 9 hours and 19 minutes. My sleep score came back 96 — the top 4% of every night I've recorded. My HRV that night was 21, the bottom 5% of every night I've recorded.
Now compare September 16th: seven hours of sleep, sleep score 84, middle of the pack. Oura flagged the whole day as stressful — four and a half hours of elevated load. My HRV was 45, top 5%. Readiness, 91%.
My best sleep score in 19 months delivered my worst night of recovery.
If all we have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.
The sleep score isn't wrong. It's just answering a different question than the one I was asking. It grades how I slept. It doesn't grade how I recovered.
Which raises an uncomfortable question. Because if the score wasn't tracking the cost, then the lever I'd been pulling for years might not have been doing what I intended either.
Takeaway 2: Bedtime Is a Dial for Sleep — Not a Dial for Recovery
I sorted my nights by what time I actually got into bed — 583 of them, every night where the ring captured a clean HRV reading out of 596 total.
The nights I fell asleep by 9:30 PM — 158 of them — I averaged 8 hours and 15 minutes. Sleep score: 87.5. The nights I fell asleep after midnight — 61 of them — I averaged 5 hours and 26 minutes. Sleep score: 72.
Nearly three hours of sleep. Almost 16 points of sleep score. That is a beautifully responsive lever.
And my HRV across that entire range? 30.9 to 31.2. Three-tenths of a point — in the wrong direction.
If you're scratching your head, we're in the same boat. I kept digging through my data to make sense of the trend lines. This past May, two nights, 10 days apart. May 4th: in bed at 12:18 AM, five hours and 47 minutes. Sleep score 78. HRV 47 — one of the highest readings I have. May 14th: in bed at 8:10 PM, nine hours and 11 minutes. Sleep score 95. HRV 23. Three and a half hours more sleep. 17 more points of sleep score. Half the HRV.
Same month, same person, same smart ring.
I haven't stopped prioritizing early bedtimes over this. Sleep is still a fundamental investment for me. I just had to accept that it isn't a cure-all.
This wasn't a change to my protocol. It was an internal audit of my expectations. I had found a lever that worked beautifully. I had just been pulling it for the wrong outcome.
Takeaway 3: The Cost of Stress Didn't Show Up on a Wednesday. It Showed Up on a Saturday.
I averaged everything by day of week, and I expected a workweek story: Tuesday rough, Wednesday brutal, Thursday worse, then sweet relief with a weekend recovery.
That's not what 19 months of N-of-1 data told me.
My physiological stress load climbs steadily Monday through Saturday. Saturday is the peak — two hours and 17 minutes of elevated load, 65% higher than Monday. Saturday is also tied for my lowest HRV of the week. And here's the part I keep coming back to: Saturday is also my longest sleep and my highest sleep score. My best sleeping day of the week is my worst recovering day of the week.
Then I went finer — 39,000 individual readings by hour. My calmest window of the entire day: two to four in the afternoon. Peak meeting hours. My most loaded hour: 8 PM, a sweet spot in my routine that I associate with winding down.
I want to step away from the numbers for a second, because I know how this looks on paper. You might assume my weekends and evenings must be chaos. But they aren't. My calendar calms down on Saturday. Apparently, my nervous system doesn't.
I don't feel like I'm carrying new stress on the weekend. I think my body is finally processing the backlog from Monday through Friday. It's the physiological equivalent of clearing the inbox. And 8 PM — my favorite hour of the day, a calm evening routine, the exact hour I would have told you I was relaxing.
What the data suggests to me is that my nervous system takes hours to decelerate coming down off a high-stakes day. It reminds me of finals week in college. I'd power through, rise to the challenge, and then the best part of the year would arrive — winter break, home, family, nothing on the calendar. And within 48 hours, I'd be sick. Recovery was never a passive state for my body. It was work my body had to schedule.
Now, Oura doesn't measure stress. It infers it — from heart rate, from temperature, from movement. A hard workout, a warm afternoon, a glass of wine, and a crucial conversation at work all look nearly identical to a ring on your finger. Based on my data, my calendar may clear after Friday, but my body works the weekend.
There's a difference between working in the business and working on it. Tactical versus strategic. Putting out fires versus shaping the future. I had been so busy working in my week that I had never once looked at the shape of it.
Takeaway 4: It's Better to Zoom Out Than to Zoom In on HRV
When I ran the analysis, one number reframed everything.
28% of all the variation in my HRV lines up with nothing more specific than which month it was. Compare that to my sleep score at 8%, or my daily stress hours at under 8%.
I want to be careful here, because the month is not an explanation. It's a container. Whatever is actually driving my recovery — a workload cycle, a season, something I've yet to uncover — is moving on more of a monthly timescale, not a nightly one.
An example: August 2025, HRV averaged 38.8, resting heart rate 49. February 2026, HRV 25.3, resting heart rate 58. A 35% collapse in HRV. Nearly nine beats per minute on my resting heart rate. Same person, same ring, same job.
Which brings me to the number I promised you at the top, and how I actually use this dashboard now.
I stopped obsessively watching my nightly HRV, because my data showed me that the real cost was moving in long, slow waves. I now only look at my HRV on a month-over-month timescale. But I still wanted a daily metric. So for my morning check-in, I now lean on my resting heart rate.
And the clinical literature backs this up. HRV is a highly sensitive metric — it can fluctuate wildly from day to day over minor acute stressors: poor sleep, a tense meeting, a heavy pour of Cabernet. Resting heart rate is a more blunt, stable instrument. It takes larger, more prolonged physiological stressors to actually push it out of its baseline range.
Month over month, my HRV and resting heart rate track each other almost perfectly — the correlation is negative 0.71. There is very little in one that isn't already in the other. But day to day, they serve different purposes. I stopped reacting to the daily fluctuations and started investing in the macro trends that actually build biological capacity.
The Bottom Line: Sleep Is a Daily Status Update. Recovery Is the Quarterly Report.
I went into 596 nights of data looking for proof that a hard year had cost me something. It had. The invoice was real. It just didn't arrive in the currency I was expecting — and it didn't land on the metric I was checking every single morning.
I think women like us — professionals trying to lead our teams, manage our homes, and optimize our biology — share some common experiences. I absolutely had nights where stress kept me awake. I remember them. Staring up at the ceiling fan, wondering whether I could force myself back to sleep, or if I should just make my peace with opening my laptop yet again at 2 AM. I'm sure you've had those nights too — wondering how early is too early for that first cup of coffee.
But when I averaged nearly 600 nights of my data together, those nights disappeared into the mean. My sleep score never carried the cost. The cost wasn't a bad night of sleep. It was a bad quarter of recovery.
Sleep is a daily status update. Recovery is the quarterly report. And many of us are managing our health on the wrong reporting cycle.
Boring + Consistency = Results.
The lever still matters. Early bedtimes still matter. But I stopped grading a hard year by the metric that was never going to show the cost — and started zooming out to the timescale where the real story was hiding.
Two Questions You Might Already Have
"I don't have an Oura ring. Where do I start?"
Resting heart rate is a great option. Almost any basic wearable captures it, or you can take it manually before your feet hit the floor in the morning. You can start by capturing that number for 30 days, then look at the monthly average. The ring is just how I happen to keep score. It's not the entry fee.
"Isn't this just perimenopause?"
Honestly, I'm 44. I'm squarely in that window, and I cannot decouple the two in my own data. Neither could anyone else looking at a single snapshot. Shifts in temperature and resting heart rate are commonly discussed in relation to this stage of life — but that's exactly the point of tracking. Without nearly 600 nights of baseline data, I'd have no way to tell a bad operating month from a new biological normal. That's not a diagnosis. It's showing up to the table with better data than I had a year ago.
Your Next Move
Don't try to overhaul your entire approach tomorrow. Be kind to yourself. Pick one.
If you don't have a smart ring, start with resting heart rate. Capture it for 30 days — manually before your feet hit the floor, or with any basic wearable — then look at the monthly average.
